Ashley O is a pop star who lives and works under the tyrannical direction of her aunt and producer, Catherine. After Ashley decides she wants to rebel against her contract, Catherine places her in a coma and scans her brain to help create a digital likeness of Ashley O and produce new music which the 3D holograph can perform, all under Catherine’s control. Meanwhile, siblings Rachel and Jack hack a robot based on a synaptic snapshot of Ashley O, allowing the virtual consciousness of Ashley O to be reborn in the robot and help plot to take down Catherine. Working together, they manage to thwart the grand debut of the edited holographic version of Ashley O.

How can celebrities keep their autonomy when producers can easily replicate them or their performances? How can musicians and other performers continue to keep a share of credit or profit when producers can easily co-opt their art? Should this technology be used to “extend the life” of musicians, allowing for holographic performances even after they pass away? What are the ethical questions raised with this concept? Should digital consciousnesses be fundamentally limited, especially when they are based on real people? How would this improperly shape the image of a celebrity, either before or after their death?

Are digitally uploaded consciousnesses technically the real person, or just an imitation? Should digital immortality be allowed if it means digital humans may have far more power than living humans? If people become able to upload consciousnesses, how should they be kept from abusing vast networks? If or when technology reaches the singularity point, how should this be regulated, and how can it be ensured that such powerful technology is not abused for hegemonic purposes?

Tom, the son of the Feed’s creator Lawrence, realizes that his best friend Max is a robot of sorts, posing as a human. In reality, the body in the tub is a host which contains the digital consciousness of Max, formerly uploaded to a cloud through his feed and then downloaded into this new body. The new version of Max debates with Tom about why he should be considered a true human being.

If having brain-computer interfaces collect millions of data points from each person, including memories, means that the life of each person can be extended if they die prematurely, is this worth the cost? Is this a true “life”? Whose viewpoint do you agree with more in this narrative?

Do we as humans need the physical world and our bodies, or can we successfully transfer/upload consciousness and live only in the digital space? Is consciousness the same thing as a soul, or different? Are these people discussed in the clip human, AI, or something in between? What are the far-reaching consequences of AI potentially being able to create realistic consciousnesses? How can brain-computer interfaces implanted into a person lead to a complete loss of their own autonomy? Can and should humans choose to donate their consciousnesses, memories, or emotions to science, with ultimately small knowledge of how these may be deployed?

In this world, access to certain afterlives are determined by wealth, with more cushy afterlives costing more money. What ethical concerns does this raise? If there is to be a digital afterlife, does everyone need a fair shot at access? Should everyone have a fair shot at access, even if they led an evil life? Should such technology as this be privatized and under centralized control? Is it feasible to have people remain in the virtual world forever, or will VR never match up to actual reality?

Once she enters a hallucinogenic mixed reality known as Abrahama City, she agrees to renew the contract with Miramount studios under the panic of her declining mental health and sense of autonomy. When mixed realities make any sort of appearance possible, how do people keep agency over their own likenesses and identities? How can engineers ensure that common human fears, including the fear of aging, do not drive innovations that will ultimately do more harm than good? Should anyone be allowed to give consent for their likeness to be used in any way the new owner sees fit, given how easily people can be coerced, manipulated, or gaslit? How could economic imbalances be further entrenched or established if certain people are allowed to sell their identities or likenesses?
